The Berbers are the indigous ethnicity of North Africa. They are distributed from the Atlantic Ocean to the Siwa Oasis in Egypt and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Niger River.
Historically they spoke Berber languages with a proper scripture. In the region near Essaouira they Shilha also known as Tashelhit or Chleuh, which is the most popular variety of the Berber, with some 5 million speakers.
Morocco is the only country where Tamazght is an official language, which was announced by Kind Mohammed IV in 2011.
In the Haha region, situated in the last rolling hills of the High Atlas mountains till the Atlantic coast, people are mainly farmers and shepherds. They try to cultivate the dry and poor soil. Many have to migrate to the bigger cities and port towns to find work in industry and so assure the living of their often big family.
